C. S. Lewis Academy Part I: The Socratic Club

The Socratic Club was designed to provide a place where Christian and non-Christian could intellectually lock horns in an atmosphere that was fearless and unyielding in argumentation, yet ruled by honesty and civility. During four days of lectures, Dr. Christopher Mitchell will examine this unique and influential mid-century enterprise and its relevance for today.

Christopher Mitchell is Director of the Marion E. Wade Center, Marion E. Wade Professor of Christian Thought, and Associate Professor of Theological Studies at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. He serves as an Editorial Consultant for Seven: An Anglo-American Literary Review. Mitchell received his M.A. from Wheaton College, and a Ph. D. from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. He has published extensively and is an internationally recognized expert on C. S. Lewis, consultant, lecturer, and presenter.

Participants will create and discuss a short piece of their own writing in the spirit of C. S. Lewis over a period of four days. Sarah Arthur will lead discussions that include the stages of the writing process, helpful methods for group critique, and genres such as letter, poem, short story, satire, and fairy tale. Even if you don’t think of yourself as a great writer, this is a great opportunity to stretch your writing skills and to experience in the interior landscape of Lewis' imagination.

Sarah Arthur is a consultant to the C. S. Lewis Festival and the award-winning author of six books, including Walking through the Wardrobe: A Devotional Quest into The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Tyndale, 2005). Together with Dr. Suzanne Rosenthal Shumway of North Central Michigan College, Sarah is the co-creator of the C. S. Lewis Writing Workshop, a free resource for grades 5–10 provided online by the C. S. Lewis Festival.
